Does people.com and perezhilton.com cause viruses?

Just from viewing?? My brother who is computer illiterate has somehow convinced my parents that they cause viruses and I shouldn't go on them. I think where he is getting this is that they have a lot of popups, which my popup blocker handles. Any substance to his nonsense claim?
