How do i expand my vocabulary and improve my English to become literate. I heard reading helps a lot? but how?

In my opinion books like harry potter which are interesting enough have really good words and literacy, just get a book that is known for good vocabulary and literacy read it and if you come across words you don't know look them up, also listen to lots of different songs to see if there are any words in them that you don't know and look them up.
